SmarterMail Exception System.OutOfMemory Exception Errors

January 12, 2011 By Larry Brouwer Leave a Comment

Today, I discovered that my SmarterMail is acting up again. When I attempted to check my emails, I get a really nice aspx error page.

My first thought is that someone has hacked my mail system, and is sending out spam again. I’ve had this problem before, and outlined the steps I undertook in order fix the problem in my post entitled, SmarterMail Security Lockdown Prodecures.

I shut down the SmarterMail Service and started looking at the mail logs, and event logs. I can see the out of memory errors, but I still don’t know what’s causing the problems.

I then restarted the SmarterMail Service and logged into my account to look at the reports being generated. There is nothing in the reports that are out of the ordinary.

Troubleshooting SmarterMail incoming SMTP requests

May 12, 2010 By Larry Brouwer Leave a Comment

Today, I discovered that SmarterMail isn’t receiving emails from other hosts outside my local network. I first logged on to SmarterMail as admin. Nothing apparently wrong with the mail system. I next opened up a Command Prompt and tried to telnet to mail.larrybrouwer.com 25 and it worked fine. Next, I logged on to a remote server and again attempted to telnet to the smtp service. This time, nothing happened.

My thoughts then turned to firewall issues. So I checked to make sure that the firewall wasn’t blocking port 25. It isn’t, but just to make sure, I disabled the firewall and again tried to telnet into the email server on port 25. I’m still not able to log in.

I next suspected my D-Link DIR-655 router as the problem. I logged into the router and checked the Virtual Server settings. The the router settings look fine. I then remapped port 25 to port 80 just to see if I can get through to the web server. Re-mapping didn’t work. Now I’m really puzzled.

SmarterMail Security Lockdown Procedures

May 5, 2010 By Larry Brouwer Leave a Comment

I spent most of the afternoon tracking down a problem with my web server. Performance came to a standstill. So I went into Task manager and found the MailService.exe process was maxing out resources. I rebooted, and found that it would gradually start taking more and more resources until the system became virtually unusable. Within 20 minutes after a reboot of the system, it would be hogging most of the memory, and max out the CPU to 100%. I also looked through the event Application logs. Searched for ‘mail’. Found errors “System.OutOfMemoryException: Exception of type ‘System.OutOfMemoryException’ was thrown.”.

I then Googled on ‘mailservice.exe memory System.OutOfMemoryException’ and found this post on SmarterTools Forums – MailService.exe memory reporting issue in 6.5. Many users seem to be experiencing this problem. A second post from the SmarterTools Forums – HELP! SmarterMail.exe keeps failing every few hours also indicates that this is a Microsoft .Net issue. They refer to the prior post stating the fix is to re-install Microsoft .Net. I’ve already attempted this procedure before. See my prior post 2010-04-23 Notes for the day.

SmarterMail and more Outlook 2007 blank emails

May 1, 2010 By Larry Brouwer Leave a Comment

I was unable to get to my SmarterMail account this morning by going to mail.larrybrouwer.com. I remembered that I had changed SM from using its own web server to IIS7. So I went into the IIS7 Management Console and edited the bindings to add mail.larrybrouwer.com to it, and now it works fine.

Logged into SmarterMail as admin. There are nine (9) reminders. They are File permission warnings for the App_Data directory. Navigated to Settings | Activation | SmarterMail Self Diagnostic. Failed permissions on /MailProcessing/ and /App_Data/. Needs write permission to both. Opened IIS7 Management Console and navigated to Application Pools. Right clicked on SmarterMail Application Pool and selected Advanced Settings… Changed it to NetworkService from ApplicationPoolIdentity. Restarted web site. Reran diagnostics. All passed.

Blank emails re-appeared in my OfficeLive account in Outlook 2007. What a bummer. Googled on ‘microsoft outlook 2007 OfficeLive Connector blank emails’ found a post Outlook Connector probs. It recommended uninstalling and reinstalling antivirus or trying the Outlook Hotmail Connector 32-bit (Beta). I checked my current version and I’m running 12.0.6423.1000. This seems to be the latest production version. I decided to try out the beta version. The new version is 14.0.4514.1008. I was unable to get the blank emails back into my Outlook inbox, so I forwarded them back to myself.

Needed to enable Telnet on my Windows 7 workstation. Go to Start | Control Panel | Programs and Features. Click on ‘turn windows features on or off’ and click on Telnet Client.

Installed WordPress on my development web server. Began configuring it.

Also installed MySQL Workbench 5.1 and 5.2beta.

Fixed Yahoo Mail pop3 integration with Outlook 2007

April 23, 2010 By Larry Brouwer Leave a Comment

My yahoo mail stopped sending emails through Microsoft Outlook 2007 several days ago. I finally had some time to troubleshoot the problem. I fixed the issue by going into Tools / Options then selecting Mail Setup. Next, click on E-mail Accounts… I then selected my yahoo.com account and clicked Change… I first performed a Test Account Settings … and it gave me a send error. After changing several settings, I found and corrected the problem by clicking on More Settings … I then selected Advanced. In the ‘Use the following type of encrypted connection:’ I changed it from ‘Auto’ to ‘SSL’ and that seemed to fix the problem. Just to let you know, I’ve set up my Yahoo mail to ‘Yahoo Asia’ so I can enable Pop3 without purchasing a Yahoo Plus account. It’s been working great for me until recently, and now it’s working great again!
